You Can Now Replace Google Assistant With Copilot on Android
When it comes to artificial intelligence chatbots, standard voice assistants like as Bixby and Google Assistant just can’t compete. With Copilot, you can easily swap out Google Assistant with an artificial intelligence chatbot.
Methods for Making Microsoft Copilot Android’s Default Assistant
Microsoft has updated the Copilot app for Android so that it may be your phone’s default assistant. Anyone in the US may obtain this update as of March 2024, since it is a part of the beta build—27.9.420225014.
For now, here’s how to make Copilot your Android device’s default assistant—you won’t need to join the beta until Microsoft upgrades the stable release.
- To access the Copilot Beta, visit the Play Store website.

- Get Microsoft Copilot from the Google Play app page after opening the Play Store app.
- To join the beta, scroll down and find the “Join” button.
- Return to the Play Store app, open it again, and then hit the Install button on top of the page. Instead, you’ll get an Update option if the software is already installed.
- Select the Digital Assistant app and then the Device Assistance app in the Apps section of the Settings menu. Your phone may need a little different approach to this.
- Choose Copilot from the available choices. Press OK when a confirmation window appears.

Making Copilot your go-to helper
Navigate to the Android Settings menu, then choose the applications option. From there, go to the Default applications menu, then select the Device Assistant app. Finally, set Copilot as the default assistant app.
Copilot is now available for mobile setup, allowing you to customise the chat style, activate features like GPT-4, and more.
If you’re using Android gesture navigation instead of the three-button arrangement, you can now long-press the Home button or slide inward diagonally from either of the bottom corners to activate the Copilot app instead of Google Assistant.
There is a Price to Pay When You Swap Out Google Assistant for Copilot
When compared to Google Assistant, Microsoft Copilot’s artificial intelligence capabilities are clearly superior. Unfortunately, you can’t use Copilot to access applications, send messages, or make phone calls on the go since it’s not an Android native feature.
The lack of a clean and user-friendly pop-up compared to Google Assistant makes this technique seem more like a shortcut to open the app. Since you’ll have to open the Copilot app to communicate with the chatbot, it might be inconvenient if you’re already using another app.
Just repeat the previous steps with Google instead of Assistant if you change your mind and wish to go back to using Google.
But if you’re concerned about parting with your virtual assistant but still want the benefits of an AI chatbot, Google Gemini is a great option for Android users. Whether you make a request on the device or enter an AI prompt, Gemini can effortlessly move between the virtual assistant and the AI chatbot. It keeps the functionality of Google Assistant.
